Week 7
Everything I read this week fortified what I already knew,
and also reminded me of where I need to do better. In President Hinckley’s talk “Stand True and Faithful”
he reminds us to be true and honest to ourselves, in our personal virtue, in
school and life. He encouraged us to get
as much schooling as possible, avoid drugs, and several other things. The one that stood out to me was to never go
around saying unkind things about
others. I hate gossip. But how often do I talk to someone about what
someone else is doing that bothers me? I
am just getting it off my chest, right?
That isn’t gossip, right? The
more I think about it the more I realize this is where I can improve. I can find better ways to work it
through. I know if I were to hire
someone I would not want someone who speaks negatively about their boss or
those they work with. I would prefer
someone who can work things out all while being a positive influence in the
office.
Of the 7 Habits of
Highly Effective People (Covey, S. R.) the one that stood out the most for
me was under Habit 3, Public Victory. I
hate when I allow others actions to control who I am. I hate that I react. Reading what I can do to build up my “emotional
bank” makes me realize that I don’t have to be the way I am. I loved the six simple suggestions of taking
time to understand others, paying attention to little things, keeping promises,
clarifying expectations, having personal integrity, and apologizing when I make
a withdrawal. Having a clearly spelled
out solution to how I can improve in an area that I struggle with the most will
benefit me as continue to work to improve myself.
